Changes Are Coming to Financial Aid Starting July 2026

Content

As part of recent sweeping legislation, significant changes are coming for federal financial aid programs starting in the 2026-27 academic year.

If you are enrolled full time prior to July 1, 2026, these changes are not expected to impact your financial aid. For part-time students continuing after July 1, your loans will be prorated starting in the 2026-27 academic year.

Here are the primary considerations for future students beginning graduate school after July 1, 2026:

Grad PLUS loans will be phased out after July 1, 2026, and will not be available for new borrowers. Students who started their program before that date may have some eligibility as they complete their program.
A distinction is being created between graduate students and professional students. The differences aren’t clearly defined as of January 2026, and we’re working to get clarification. Nursing programs at Regis are classified as graduate, not professional.
Graduate-level loans subsidized by the Direct Loan Program will have a cap of $20,500 annually, with a lifetime cap of $100,000. Students classified as professional students will be eligible for higher limits.
