Curriculum

Each course in the leadership in nursing certificate has been broken into four modules. Each module covers a specific leadership topic and is designed to uncover your unique leadership traits, while developing your distinct leadership style.

COURSE 1:

Module 1: Introduction to Leadership: What Does Leadership Mean to Me?

  • Analyze the key concepts of leadership
  • Compare and contrast leadership theories
  • Differentiate between leadership and management
  • Identify the definition, format, and purpose of an annotated bibliography

Module 2: Leadership Models and Theories.

  • Differentiate the Leadership Traits Model and the Process Model
  • Evaluate leadership theories and styles in practice
  • Examine the task and relationship dimensions of leadership
  • Identify and analyze your personal leadership style
  • Develop an annotated bibliography

Module 3: Create a Climate of Professionalism, Motivation, and Emotional Intelligence.

  • Compare the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors on effective leadership
  • Evaluate professionalism and motivation as components in a healthy work environment
  • Appraise the impact of emotional intelligence on effective leadership
  • Recognize personal strengths and weaknesses as a leader

Module 4: How Can I Effectively Manage and Resolve Conflict?

  • Analyze sources of conflict and tension in the health care environment
  • Evaluate conflict resolution strategies

COURSE 2:

Module 1: How Can I Promote Effective Teams and Collaboration?

  • Appraise important concepts in effective communication in health care
  • Critique essential elements of effective team building, interprofessional communication, and collaboration
  • Examine conflict management strategies as they relate to nursing leadership

Module 2: How Can I Be a Culturally Competent Leader?

  • Interpret culturally competent nursing leadership
  • Appraise important legislation and laws about collective bargaining
  • Summarize key components of labor relations management by the effective nurse leader

Module 3: What can I Learn From the Leadership Styles of Other Nurse Leaders?

  • Describe in a written paper what you learned about leadership from your nurse interviewee
  • Synthesize learnings from the nurse interview into your own leadership style

Module 4: What Will I Need to Meet Future Leadership Competencies?

  • Assess leadership competencies and skills in the NOF Competencies Model
  • Analyze factors integral to ethical leadership
  • Synthesize course concepts as they apply to the nurse leader
