Dr. Lorri Birkholz has been a nurse for over 40 years, graduating as a Diploma RN from Presbyterian/St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Denver, CO, then completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, a Master of Science in Nursing in the Administration and Leadership track from the University of Texas-Arlington, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Old Dominion University.

Dr. Birkholz’s early nursing experience involved emergency nursing and critical care transport. Leadership roles included Chief Flight Nurse, Emergency Department Manager, and Director of Emergency Services. Other areas of clinical experience include hospice and palliative care nursing.

Dr. Birkholz is a member of ANA, Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA), and the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) where she presented on ethical nursing topics at both the 2023 and 2024 national conferences. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. Dr. Birkholz is a portfolio evaluator for the Ohio State University’s EBP certification course. Additionally, she is a peer review for several professional journals who publish manuscripts with a focus on bioethics. Her work has been published in Nursing Ethics, Nursing Outlook, Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing, and American Journal of Nursing. Working with colleagues from Austria, her team developed and published the Ethical Decision-Making Confidence (EDMC) Scale to quantify ethical confidence in nurse leaders.
