Lawana began her nursing career working as a Labor and Delivery RN. In the small rural area where her hospital was located she saw a lack of adequate prenatal care and a high rate of teen pregnancies which prompted her to return to school and pursue a BSN degree to work towards providing better reproductive health education for the community and for fellow nurses. She completed her BSN at Lander University and continued her studies completing an MSN degree with a WHNP certification at the University of Cincinnati in 2012.

She has worked in Women’s Health her entire nursing career and has a passion for this area of practice.  Her work for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control in family planning clinics gave her the opportunity to help with initiatives to educate young women regarding reproductive health.

Currently Lawana practices clinically with the Center for Health and Well-Being on the campus of the University of South Carolina. She works in the women’s clinic providing care for college aged young women including health screenings and contraceptive services. She has been involved with increasing access to long-acting reversible contraception for patients through a statewide initiative with funding from the Choosewell grant and New Morning Foundation over the past 5 years.

Lawana accepted the position of Program Director and assistant professor in the Women’s Health Program online with Regis College in Fall of 2020.
