For fifteen years, Sara F. has dedicated her career to helping learners succeed. As a Student Success Advisor at Regis College, she brings a wealth of experience to her role, where she helps students rise to success in the Master of Science in Nursing program specializing in Psychiatric Mental Health.

In our conversation, Sara shares insights on what makes Regis special, her methods for building genuine connections with learners, and what inspires her to guide students from their first day to beyond graduation. Join us as we explore the support system that empowers Regis College students to thrive.

What resources does Regis College offer that makes its nursing program stand out?

Regis College has dedicated departments for all of a student's needs. Regis offers student support, student accounts, library services, clinical coordinators, 24/7 technical support, accessibility services, financial aid and VA benefits. For online learners who are close to campus, they have access to all the campus amenities as well.

How do you connect with each learner as an individual?

During each welcome call that I have with a student, I always ensure that I get them to tell me about themselves. I like to know about their family, hobbies, passions, and goals. It is important to build rapport during that initial call. It sets the stage for how our relationship will be. I also tell them a bit about myself so that we can try and find some common interests.

Can you share how you try to make a difference in a learner's journey?

I believe I make a difference in every student's journey, whether it be something as simple as navigating the online system to something more serious like creating a strategy to help them be successful in balancing work, school and home life.

How have you connected with learners even beyond graduation?

When we support students, we often build true friendships. I have multiple learners that I continue to keep in touch with through WhatsApp. Students will message me to check in and see how I am doing and to let me know what is new in their lives.

Students remember what you tell them. When my mother was battling cancer, one of my students would always ask me how she was doing with her treatments. Now seven years later, that same student will reach out and still ask me how my mother is doing.

What inspires you to reach out to learners who have stopped their programs to encourage them to re-start?

I know that students choose to do their program because they have a goal and want to get to the next level in their lives. When a student stops out of their program, it is so important for me to remind them of the reason they chose to do the program initially. I do everything that I can to support them so that they are able to continue their studies and reach their goal.

What advice would you give to people thinking about earning an advanced degree?

The advice I would give individuals looking to obtain an advanced degree is know exactly what you want to get out of it and where you want it to take you. It will take a lot of hard work, sacrifice and determination, so keeping goals in mind at all times is so important.

What’s one takeaway you can share after 15 years working in student support services?

The only constant has been change, and I have been able to not only withstand it but grow as changes have occurred.
